While most of Dubai slows down during the summer months, the GulfSport workshop is buzzing with activity as technicians prepare the Radical sports racing cars for the start of the fast approaching, 2007/2008 season. And a radical one it promises to be when the new season kicks off at the Dubai Autodrome in October.

The 2007/8 Gulf Radical Cup represents a major milestone in the history of national motor racing in the Middle East when we will witness a genuine grass-roots championship take 16 or more local drivers onto the grid.

2007/8 Gulf Radical Cup – Provisional Entries
Class C Karim Al Azhari Radical SR3 UAE
Mohammed Al Owais Radical SR3 UAE
Bassam Kronfli Radical SR3 Canada
Omran Al Owais Radical SR3 UAE
Maurits Knopjes Radical SR3 Netherlands
TBA Radical SR3 Bahrain
Dave Moran Radical SR3 Ireland
Viktor Shaitr Radical SR3 Russia
Peter Myachin Radical SR3 Russia
Andrew Lemon Radical SR3 UK
Rami Malhas Radical SR3 Lebanon
Mohammed Al Awadi Radical SR3 UAE
John Stanley Radical SR3 UK
Robert Simpson Radical SR3  UK
Class B Eric Charles Radical SR5 France
Class A Rafael Unzurrunzaga Radical SR8 Spain

These FIA licensed Radical drivers very much mirror the diversity and demographics of the country, with drivers from the UAE, Bahrain, Lebanon, France, Russia, Holland, Canada, England, Spain, Ireland and the UK. We can expect a real challenge for race wins from current Champion Karim Al-Azhari, the two Al-Owais brothers, Bassam Kronfli and Maurits Knopjes all capable of winning races. Having said that, John Stanley won the SR3 Class of the Radical World Cup in 2006, David Moran is a very experienced Radical driver and Peter Myachin is a Russian champion, so nobody can predict the outcome of this very exciting championship.

Eric Charles, classic bike collector and sportscar enthusiast will be taking delivery of his Class B Radical SR5 CN (in the classic blue and orange colours of the Gulf Oil Ford GT40). The SR5, the first Radical designed to meet FIA Sportscars regulations has a Group N 2-litre Honda VTEC engine and Hewland 6-speed race box.

David Moran, owner of Dubai’s only road going Radical SR3 has taken delivery of a 2007 Radical SR3 in the famous British Racing Green colours of the 2003 Le Mans-winning Bentley.

Maurits Knopjes (ARC Motorsport), Dutch karting champion and Golf GTi race winner, has recently taken delivery of Jean-Yves Mallat’s race winning 2006 Radical SR3.

Rafael Unzurrunzaga, from the Basque country but now living in Dubai, who raced a Radical SR4 in the first round of the Radical World Cup in Valencia, will bring his 2007 SR8 Powertec to Dubai for the Gulf Radical Cup.

Rami Malhas, Dubai based property developer and sportscar enthusiast will also be making his race debut in a 2004 spec Radical SR3.

Young Emirati driver, Mohammed Al Awadi (Palm Yacht Charter), after some intense training in karts in Dubai and Holland will be competing in the Gulf Radical Cup in a 2004 Radical SR3. Mohammed, one of the most promising young drivers in the UAE, has his sights set on an ambitious programme of European racing.

The huge commitment made by drivers to race is a sign of growing confidence and a great indicator of the future of the sport and the fact that the ‘777 Racing’ team has been formed in Bahrain with one of their best national drivers (yet to be announced) to race in the Gulf Radical Cup is a real sign of support and cooperation in the region and could signal the start of a true pan-GCC championship.
