Quaife Radical Clubman's Cup: Castle Combe, Race 2

18th July 2010

Darren Luke took a lights-to-flag victory in the second of the weekend’s Quaife Radical Clubman’s Cup, although had it not been for a safety car period late in the race, the hard-charging Rachel Davies might have challenged for the lead.

Steven Lindsay actually leapfrogged Luke at the start of the race to take the lead, with Darron Anley in tow, and Mark Abbott, having a strong weekend in his new-for-2010 PR6. 2009 series champion was also having a good race in fifth, but he couldn’t escape the pace of Davies, who passed the former champ on the outside of Camp corner on lap 5.

On lap six, only a second split the top three, with Luke closing on Lindsay, Abbott a further three seconds behind. However, this order was dramatically upset on lap 10. As Davies passed Abbott, ahead on the road there was contact between Luke and Lindsay. Anley could do little to avoid an accident with Lindsay, sidelining the pair for the remainder of the race. With the race finishing under the safety car, Davies took the runner-up sport, with Millar third.

Luke’s victory also awarded him the Prosport class honours, greatly aiding his bid for the overall Clubman’s title this year, although last year's champion Colin Millar has now overtaken him in the overall stakes with a slender four-point lead. Davies’ second-placed finish gave her the Supersport win for Race 2, as well as the Driver Of The Day Award. With Lindsay and Chris Blades failing to finish, David Frankland took the Invitation Class, with another strong mid-pack battle resulting in a win for Andy Harwood in the Clubsport Class.
The next round of the Quaife Radical Clubman’s Cup takes place at Brands Hatch in Kent.
