Exciting Times For Radical Australia
10th September 2009
Last week’s inaugural Radical Australia single-marque race event has been hailed a real success by drivers and Radical management, with three action-packed races taking place at Eastern Creek Raceway, New South Wales.
Held at Sydney’s main race circuit, the races coincided with the opening of Radical Australia’s new workshop and showroom facility at the circuit. It is the first time the Australian Racing Drivers Club has permitted a racecar team or manufacturer to take up residence at the circuit.
The racing featured two short sprints, followed by a longer, one-hour enduro race, and produced three different winners; Glyn Edis, Trevor Gerber and Peter Opie the respective victors. Amongst the 18 starters for each event was guest driver and 1987 World Motorcycle Grand Prix Champion, Wayne Gardner. Gardner finished fourth in the Enduro race, and was full of praise for the cars and the series.
Radical co-founder Mick Hyde was also present, waving off the day’s races. Hyde was guest of honour at the series’ celebration dinner, held at the Sydney opera house and attended by over 30 guests. Earlier in the day, journalists and corporate guest got a first chance to get behind-the-wheel of a Radical, supervised by Radical Australia staff.
“The enthusiasm is there and it’s great to see 18 of my babies running around Eastern Creek in the sunshine,” added Hyde. “It was good to see that the drivers were having a proper go and spinning off, dropping wheels in the dirt and the like. That’s how these cars are meant to be driven.”
